Be A bigWhat is School Based Mentoring?

School Based Mentoring is an elementary after school and lunch buddy mentoring program that meets once a week for ten weeks in the Fall and ten weeks in the Spring semesters at the school campus. School Based Mentoring focuses on developing friendships within the school environment and providing positive role models to the children in our programs.

The program runs at in Flagstaff at four elementary schools and also at Williams Elementary. School Based matches are one-on-one and are supervised by a facilitator who plans activities, provides snacks and oversees the sessions. School based matches also have an option of continuing their match through the summer months if the Big, Little and Parent agree to do so.

Lunch BuddiesWhat is Lunch Buddies?

Lunch Buddies is a mentoring session that allows “Matches”, a student (Mentee) to meet with an adult volunteer (Mentor), once a week during their assigned school lunch period. Matches will meet typically about 40-50 minutes, depending on your school’s lunch and recess times in an available room at your school. The Mentors will arrive to escort their Mentee to the cafeteria a few minutes before their class is dismissed for lunch. They will eat lunch together, and spend the time having good conversation while having games and activities available to them. Lunch Buddies will meet on a set day, weekly for the entire school year, excluding holidays.

Volunteers must meet the following criteria to be matched with a child in our School Based/Lunch Buddies program:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Be open to being matched with a child in need of a positive adult friend in their life
  • Be able to commit to a 1 year relationship, meeting once a week at the child’s school during his/her lunch period for the entire school year
  • Complete enrollment, interview, and orientation with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff

If you meet the criteria above and are ready to get started please call (928)774-0649 to speak with an agency staffer, or fill out our Volunteer Enrollment Form.
